Car line has improved significantly since the start of school, and we are excited to keep seeing it get better each day. Today, our car line dismissal was exactly 10 minutes!
There are two things that will help us continue improving:
- Pull as far forward as possible whenever there is a gap between your vehicle and the car in front of you.
- Most importantly, do not merge until you reach the orange cone. Even after I enter your car number, please stay in your lane until you get to the cone.
Keeping two lanes open as long as possible allows us to get more cars into the parking lot and keeps cars from backing up onto the street.
At the orange cone, the two lanes should merge using a zipper pattern: one car from the right lane, then one car from the left lane, then right, then left.
Thank you for continuing to follow the process and work with us. We have made huge progress in just a few days!

Another great improvement with dismissal today! We shaved another five minutes off our dismissal time and are now down to about 15 minutes. Our goal is 10 minutes, and it feels like we are on track to get there!
We also want to give a big shoutout to our walkers, car riders and bus riders; all three groups have been doing an excellent job with the small adjustments we’ve made. With each day, everyone is getting more comfortable with the process, and it’s really showing in how smoothly dismissal is running.
A few reminders from today that will help us keep improving:
-Families enter the front lot from 9th Street and need to form two lanes. This helps us get cars off the street and into the lot more quickly so numbers can be entered and students can head out quickly.
-Please do not merge the two lanes until you reach the orange cone with the merge sign.
-Please remain in your vehicle at all times.
-As you move toward the loading zone, always pull as far forward as possible before stopping.
Thank you for continuing to follow the process and adjust with us. Each day is getting smoother, faster, and more efficient, and we really appreciate everyone’s patience and cooperation as we work toward that 10-minute goal!

Thank you for a great first day! As we continue settling into our routines, we want to make sure everyone has clear information about dismissal.
At Newport Intermediate, we use three dismissal methods: bus riders, walkers, and car riders. We will not use the term "parent pick up" because it can mean different things. Please use the definitions below when identifying how your child will go home.
Bus Riders -
Bus riders are called for dismissal at 2:40.
A bus rider is any student who rides a school bus home. Students will report to their assigned bus and will be checked before boarding.
Please make sure your child knows their bus number. If you do not know your child's bus number, please call the school before 12pm tomorrow and we can help.
Walkers -
Walkers are dismissed at 2:42.
Your child is considered a walker if:
* They walk home on their own or with a sibling.
* You walk to school to meet them.
* You park off campus and walk onto school property to meet them.
If you are getting out of your vehicle and walking to meet your child, your child is a walker, not a car rider.
Adults meeting walkers should go to the blacktop area of the playground. Students will be dismissed from the double doors that lead to the blacktop to meet you.
Students who need to meet a younger or older sibling will wait along the curb of the blacktop under the trees so siblings have a consistent place to find one another.
Car Riders -
Car riders are dismissed at 2:42.
Your child is a car rider only if you are driving through the school car line and remaining in your vehicle.
Please:
* Have your school-issued car tag visible.
* Remain in your vehicle throughout the car line.
* Follow the directions of staff as you move through the loading area.
Students will be called from their classrooms and organized into groups before being sent to their vehicles. This allows us to load several cars safely and efficiently at one time.
If you arrive without a car tag, you will be directed to park and come into the front office. You can sign up for a car tag and take your child with you after completing that process.
Thank you for helping us keep dismissal safe, organized, and consistent. The more we all use the same three terms and follow the same procedures, the smoother dismissal will be for everyone.

Household Income Form
The beginning of the school year often brings a lot of paperwork for families, but few documents are more misunderstood than the Free and Reduced Lunch form, often known today as the Household Income Form. As a school and district, these forms are not just about lunch; they are a direct tool for advocating for the resources students need to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. The accurate completion of this form by every family, regardless of their perceived income status, is essential to secure the following critical supports:
1. CPE / Free Meals for All Students
What it does: Allows entire schools to serve breakfast and lunch to every student at no cost. Newport Independent School District is part of this program.
How it helps: High form completion rates prove our school’s need so we can keep providing free meals for everyone year after year.
2. Title I Funding (Extra Academic Help)
What it does: Brings federal funding directly to our school.
How it helps: Pays for intervention staff, math and reading materials, learning tools, and teacher training that benefits all students.
3. FRYSC (Family Resource Youth Services Centers)
What it does: Funds our school’s resource center staff, programs, and supplies.
How it helps: Helps students overcome non-academic barriers by providing supplies, clothing, programming, etc.
4. 21st Century Grants (After-School & Summer Programs)
What it does: Wins competitive grants for free student activities outside regular school hours.
How it helps: Pays for after-school educational support/tutoring, STEM programs, after-school clubs, and summer programming at our schools.

As you all know, our summer program planted many herbs and vegetables in our gardens this year. These plants are GROWING and Newport Intermediate families are welcome to harvest crops from the school garden.
Please stop by the school any time the walking gates are open, on the 9th street side, and pick some herbs and vegetables for yourself!
Our students have planted: basil, cilantro, eggplant, hot peppers, sweet peppers, tomatoes, and cucumbers. Produce needs to be harvested all summer and what a great way for your students to showcase their hard work.

📢 Reminder from the School Nurse
Attention Incoming 6th Graders:
As students prepare to enter 6th grade, Kentucky state policy requires:
• A school physical
• Two vaccines required for 6th-grade entry
These can be completed as soon as your child turns 11.
Please return the completed physical and vaccination forms to the nurse’s office as soon as possible.
⚠️ These requirements must be completed before the first day of 6th grade.

Start of School Assistance (SOSA) is an EducateNKY volunteer initiative that helps students in Covington and Newport start the school year feeling welcomed, supported, and ready to learn. Volunteers will serve during the first three days of school, supporting arrival, classrooms, lunch, recess, or departure based on each school’s needs.
