Newport Intermediate School students engaged with professionals from throughout the greater Northern Kentucky / Cincinnati area during Friday's Career Day event on the school's campus.
More than 40 local businesses participated in the activity, providing students with the opportunity to learn about a myriad of career paths.
"At Newport Intermediate School, we are committed to engaging local businesses and strengthening our relationships within the community," Newport Intermediate School Principal Dr. Jennifer Michael said.
Exposing students to diverse careers enables discovery of new interests, setting future goals and understanding of skills needed for success in different fields, Michael noted.
"These experiences not only broaden their perspectives but also inspire them to dream big and strive for a bright future," Michael concluded. "We appreciate the support of our local businesses in making Career Day a meaningful and impactful event for our students."
Newport Intermediate School Counselor Amber Onkst noted that there are regular discussions with students regarding how current academic work ties into career paths that they are interested in pursuing.
"This creates motivation and a drive to help them understand how the skills being taught in the classroom are building blocks to help them with their future," Onkst said. "We try our best to make this event engaging, and this year, we added hands-on learning opportunities through our school playground area to host local businesses that utilize large equipment in their workday."
Students were able to experience skills such as operating an excavator.
"These are opportunities that most children in urban areas may not have as a routine part of their childhood, but for many students, this may inspire a career path in a field of work that was previously unknown to them," Onkst said. "We recognize that we are educating the next generation of the workforce, and we want to help prepare our students as best we can."
School personnel expressed gratitude for business partner support and commitment in aiding the success of the endeavor.

On Wednesday, throughout Newport Independent Schools, teachers, staff and students celebrated World Autism Awareness Day, which is designated on April 2.
The designation was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2007, with the first observance occurring in 2008.
"It promotes acceptance, appreciation, inclusion, and the recognition of contributions made by people with autism in their communities," Newport Primary School special education teacher Amanda Zimmerman said. "Dr. Stephen Shore, a college professor on the spectrum, said one of my favorite quotes: 'If you've met one person with autism, you've met one person with autism.', which is a great way of saying that autism presents differently for everyone."
When given appropriate supports and accommodations, children and adults with autism can have equal opportunities to access, participate, contribute, and succeed in our communities, Zimmerman concluded.
